You might be wondering if you are a good candidate for total ankle replacement surgery. The best candidates are healthy people who suffer from ankle arthritis but have minimal or no deformity of the ankle. They also weigh less than 250 pounds, are older than 50 and are at the lower end of the physical activity spectrum.
You are probably not a good candidate for a total ankle replacement if you have diabetes, a history of Charcot neuroarthropathy, a poorly aligned ankle, skin sores, poor circulation or heart and lung disease. Other reasons total ankle replacement surgery might not be an option for you are: a weight of 250-plus pounds, a high activity level, a history of infection or ongoing ulceration or infection.
