Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Recover Faster, Live Healthier With Minimally Invasive Approaches

In recent years, technological advances have allowed more back and neck conditions to be treated with minimally invasive spine surgery as opposed to regular open surgery.

Minimally invasive neck surgery and spinal disc surgery use special techniques, small incisions and specialized instruments to stabilize the vertebral bones and spinal joints and/or relieve pressure being applied to the spinal nerves. For patients in Franklin Lakes, Glen Rock, Westwood and the rest of Bergen County, minimally invasive approaches at Kayal Pain & Spine Center mean less trauma to the body, reduced blood loss, smaller surgical incisions and decreased need for strong pain medication.

They can often be performed as outpatient procedures or involve only a one-night stay in the hospital. Patients who undergo minimally invasive spine surgery also experience reduced post-operative pain and scarring, faster rehabilitation, better preservation of normal anatomy and an earlier return to work and normal daily activities.

Minimally invasive spine surgery can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:

  • Disc degeneration
  • Herniated or bulging discs
  • Sciatica
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal fractures
  • Spinal stenosis

What to expect before, during and after minimally invasive spine surgery

The most commonly used technique in minimally invasive spine and neck surgery uses a tubular retractor. During the procedure, a small incision is made and the tubular retractor is inserted down to the spinal column.

A tubular retractor is a surgical solution that creates a tunnel, giving your surgeon direct access to the small area where the problem is located. The tubular retractor holds the muscles open and is kept in place throughout the procedure. Your surgeon then accesses the spine using small instruments that fit through the center of the retractor.

This method displays real-time X-ray images of your spine on a screen throughout the surgery. At the end of the procedure, the retractor is removed and the muscles return to their original position.

To prepare for surgery, quit smoking if you smoke, exercise on a regular basis to improve your recovery rate and stop taking any nonessential medications or herbal remedies that may react with anesthetics or other medications.

The healthier you are, the more you can reduce your risks of surgical complications. Healthier patients also recover from surgery quicker than patients in poor health.

Benefits

Discover the advantages
Minimally invasive surgeries offer several advantages over open surgery, which typically requires large incisions, muscle stripping, more anesthesia, a long hospital stay and a long recuperation period. Minimally invasive spine surgery offers benefits, such as:

  • Better cosmetic results from smaller incisions
  • A few tiny scars instead of one large scar
  • Less blood loss from surgery
  • Reduced risk of muscle damage since less or no cutting of the muscle is required
  • Reduced risk of infection and post-operative pain
  • Often outpatient/same-day surgery (or just one-night hospital stay)
  • Faster recovery from surgery and less rehabilitation required
  • Quicker return to daily activities
  • Diminished reliance on pain medications after surgery
