Partial and Patellofemoral Knee Replacement

Don’t Let Knee Pain Slow You Down

For patients with a diseased or damaged knee who have found no pain relief from conservative treatments, knee replacement surgery is an option to discuss with your orthopaedic specialist. Kayal Orthopaedic Center is proud to offer various types of knee replacements, which allows our patients and their surgeon to choose the best approach based on their individual needs and characteristics.

The most common type of unicompartmental knee replacement is patellofemoral knee replacement. This surgery replaces the knee compartment between the kneecap (patella) and the lower leg bone (tibia). Partial, or unicompartmental, knee replacement surgery replaces only the damaged part of the knee: the medial, lateral or patellofemoral compartment. This better preserves range of motion and knee function, because it retains the healthy cartilage and bone in the knee. Surgeons substitute the damaged tissue with a long-lasting, synthetic material.

Dr. Kayal has undergone specialized training to perform total knee, partial knee and patellofemoral replacements with the assistance of the Mako robotic arm. Robotic-assisted surgery enhances precision and accuracy. It can result in less pain, speedier recuperation and better alignment of the new joint.

Our surgeons use minimally invasive techniques to perform these procedures. This means they use only a 3- to 4-inch incision, as opposed to the typical 8- to 12-inch incision often required for total knee replacement surgery.

Discover the advantages

Partial knee replacement surgery may be performed as an in-patient or out-patient procedure. Using minimally invasive techniques, surgeons need not cut any tendons or muscle, which enables patients to recuperate much faster and experience less pain than those undergoing total knee replacement surgery. In addition to enjoying expedited rehabilitation and return to activity, our partial knee replacement patients benefit from less scar tissue and renewed stability and pain-free movement. Dr. Kayal is the regional pioneer of partial knee and the patellofemoral knee replacement technology and has performed more of these surgeries—more than 200 annually—than any other orthopaedic surgeon in the area, using state-of-the-art facilities, equipment and techniques. Dr. Kayal introduced outpatient joint replacement surgery and minimally invasive partial and patellofemoral knee replacements to this region in New Jersey. In this video you will hear from one of our patients who received a partial knee replacement through our minimally invasive surgical procedure: https://youtu.be/eqg_9-Mhl9Q.
