Facet Joint Injections

Non-Surgical Pain Relief for Spine Health

Facet joints are small paired joints in between the vertebrae in the back of the spine. Facet joints help stabilize the spine and allow it to have range of motion of flexibility. When facet joints become inflamed or irritated, it leads to facet joint syndrome. Several conditions can impact facet joints, including:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Degenerative discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Back injury
  • Mechanical stress to the back

Facet joint injections can help diagnose the facet joints as the source of pain and provide successful pain relief. Using X-ray guidance, the team at Kayal Pain & Spine Center can see and accurately target the affected joint(s).

During the treatment, your surgeon will send a small needle into the facet joint. Using contrast dye, your surgeon can confirm correct positioning of the needle into the facet joint.

An injection containing a mixture of anesthetic and anti-inflammatory (steroid) medication is then slowly injected into the joint. The injection helps in the following ways:

  • The local anesthetic numbs the nerves for a period of hours providing short-term relief.
  • The anti-inflammatory (steroid) medication has a long-term effect, reducing inflammation in the joint and around the nerves.

What to expect before, during and after facet joint injections

At Kayal Pain & Spine Center, you’re in the hands of an elite surgical team that’s focused on you. Each surgeon uses his or her knowledge and advanced training while taking a customized, progressive approach to your health. This enables you to overcome pain and limitations, get stronger and faster, and live the active life you deserve.

The entire procedure may take up to 30 minutes. However, the injections only last a couple of minutes. Typically, you only need to undergo one or two rounds of injections to feel better.

Local anesthetic provides almost immediate pain relief. Some patients may notice an increase in pain in the days following the procedure. Increased pain is only temporary as the anesthetic wears off and until the cortisone (steroid) effect kicks in.

The following day after the procedure, we recommend that you take it easy. You can even track your symptoms and effects in a pain journal to monitor your progress. Keeping track of your health after any medical procedure is wise, as it helps doctors identify problems and intervene as needed.
