Cervical Motion Sparing Technology

Innovative Therapy for Restoring Neck Strength and Mobility

Cervical fusion surgery is the traditional procedure used to treat conditions that put pressure on the spinal cord and related nerves. While this surgery relieves pain and pressure by merging the vertebrae that cause the problem, it limits your mobility. Innovative procedures that use cervical motion sparing technology (CMST) were developed as alternatives—offering the best of both worlds because they relieve pain while preserving mobility. The elite surgeons at Kayal Pain & Spine Center are experts in these state-of-the art techniques, including:

  • Cervical artificial disc replacement: This surgery is typically performed when you have a cervical disc herniation causing significant neck and/or arm pain that isn’t responding to nonsurgical treatment. Your damaged disc is replaced with a small, flexible disc made of metal, such as cobalt or titanium, and thermoplastic polymer. Your new disc takes on the role of the damaged disc, holding your neck together and enabling movement.
  • Laminoplasty: This surgery relieves spinal cord pressure (cervical spinal stenosis) in the neck by creating more space for the spinal cord and nerve roots.

Benefits

Discover the advantages
Surgeries using cervical motion sparing technology can help strengthen and stabilize the neck, which has myriad benefits for the patients who receive it. In addition to eliminating or reducing pain and symptoms of disc-related injury or damage, these procedures have faster recovery times than traditional therapies. Patients are often able to remove cervical collars sooner and return to work more quickly.

These procedures can result in less long-term strain on the body than fusion therapy. With fusion, two or more bones are grafted together, which can cause the supportive bones to degenerate faster than they otherwise would have.
