What Is an MRI and How Does It Work?

MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. It’s a noninvasive medical test that generates pictures of internal body parts using a large magnet, radiofrequencies and a computer. The process can be as short as 30 minutes or as long as two hours.

The machine is a long, tube-shaped apparatus that forms a magnetic field around the patient. Radio waves, which are delivered from a scanner, force the nuclei of the atoms in your body out of their normal positions. As the nuclei shift back into place, they send out radio signals, which are used by a computer to create pictures of your body. The images can be invaluable in helping your doctor diagnose and treat your medical conditions.

At Kayal MRI, the machine is spacious and wide to create the most non-claustrophobic experience available. The machine uses a high resolution, 1.5 Tesla Siemens magnet and other state-of-the-art technology for superior imaging. The process is fast and accurate so you’ll be on your way quickly, confident the images sent to your doctor are as precise as possible.

Why Did My Surgeon Order an MRI?

Orthopaedic surgeons use MRIs to more carefully examine bones, joints, muscles, tendons and cartilage. Sometimes, they are searching for injuries or the existence of structural abnormalities. They also use MRIs to diagnose or track conditions such as tumors, herniated or degenerative discs, arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, joint degeneration, bone marrow disease, osteonecrosis, congenital abnormalities and more.

MRIs can be an invaluable tool in sports medicine in Paramus, NJ, and throughout Bergen County. An MRI is an important tool to evaluate a patient’s progress following a joint replacement or other corrective orthopaedic procedure, as well.

What Can I Expect?

It’s easy to prepare for your MRI. You don’t have to change your eating habits or skip your prescription medication. You should dress comfortably and make sure not to wear anything metal, such as jewelry. You should arrive about 15 minutes before the procedure and bring any necessary paperwork, including medical reports and insurance cards.

Your technologist understands that this can be a scary process and will treat you with compassion and kindness. You will be guided through from start to finish. During the procedure, you will hear a knocking sound. Don’t worry. This is normal and we will provide earplugs or music to help you relax.

Your doctor will receive results within 24 hours and often sooner if requested.
