MINIMALLY INVASIVE ORTHOPAEDIC SURGERY: UNICOMPARTMENTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT
Some Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC patients suffering from osteoarthritis of the knee may be candidates for unicompartmental knee replacement. NJ orthopedic physician Robert A. Kayal, MD and his surgical team are experts in this type of minimally invasive joint replacement, and perform hundreds of joint replacements each year.
What is Unicompartmental Knee Replacement?
Also called “partial knee replacement,” unicompartmental knee surgery is conducted with small, non-invasive incisions rather than the conventional, large incision that often accompanies total knee replacement (TKR). Unlike TKR, unicompartmental procedures address only one of the knee’s three compartments: medial, lateral or patellofemoral. Surgeons leave healthy cartilage and bone in place, substituting a long-lasting, synthetic material for damaged tissue in the offending compartment. Because the procedure does not require total joint replacement, patients recover faster and enjoy an expedited return to work and everyday life.
