NJ elbow surgeon Robert A. KayaL, MD is an experienced trauma and fracture surgeon with offices located in Ridgewood, NJ and Franklin Lakes, NJ. Dr. Kayal and his team of orthopedic physicians treat and rehabilitate all types of upper limb fractures, including broken elbows.
Causes and Symptoms of Broken Elbows
The elbow joint includes three bones: the humerus, radius and ulna. Helping you to flex, bend and reach, the elbow joint is responsible for hundreds of movements and activities throughout the day. Patients can injure an elbow in a variety of ways, such as:
- High impact falls (especially those that require bracing yourself with an outstretched arm)
- Direct blow or trauma to the elbow joint
- Bicycle, snowboard, skateboard or automobile accidents
- Osteoporosis damage over time
Upon fracturing an elbow, patients generally experience a range of immediate symptoms, which include severe pain, swelling and deformity, open wounds, immobility and discoloration. An elbow fracture should be addressed as an emergency, and your NJ orthopedist will examine and x-ray the arm to determine the extent of the break. If your elbow injury caused damage to an artery, the physician may recommend an arteriogram, as well.
Broken Elbow Treatments
Treatment for a fractured elbow differs based upon the injury’s severity and the patient’s age. Conservative treatment may include elevation, splinting/casting and ice—while more extreme cases require surgical repair to bones, blood vessels and affected nerves. The Kayal Orthopaedic Center team will determine the best course of treatment and rehabilitation for your broken elbow, returning you to daily activity as quickly as possible.
The board-certified orthopedic surgeons at the Center treat fracture patients who live in Essex County, Hudson County, Passaic County and Bergen County. Visit our patient information center or contact our New Jersey orthopedic medical group today to schedule your elbow consultation. |
