NJ sports medicine doctor Robert A. Kayal is an expert in the treatment of tendinitis and other sports-related injuries. Tendinitis is a painful condition that affects the tendons near joints: most notably in the shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees, and heels. While this condition is often associated with athletics, it is also a common problem for non-athletes who perform specific repetitive motions. Tendinitis severity can vary from a minor ache to an extreme, shooting pain throughout the joint. The physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center expertly identify the extent of your tendinitis, and tailor a treatment plan to return you to full activity.
What is Tendinitis?
Tendinitis is the inflammation and swelling of a tendon, which is the structure that connects to muscle to bone. The condition can be caused by (1) repetitive minor impact to an area, (2) a sudden injury or trauma, or (3) the loss of tendon elasticity due to aging. The wide range of tendinitis severity may result from activities as varied as gardening, painting, baseball and skiing.
Tendinitis is diagnosed by listening to the patient’s description of discomfort, and conducting a physical examination. During the exam, Dr. Robert A. Kayal and his surgical team assess pain and mobility limitations during applied resistance. The physicians will also look for inflammation, tenderness and redness in the area.
Treatment for Tendinitis
The first step in tendinitis treatment is to discontinue the activity or repetitive motion causing the condition. A splint or brace may also be used to immobilize the affected area, and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) are prescribed to reduce pain and swelling. If these initial treatments do not resolve tendinitis, the sports medicine specialists at Kayal Orthopaedic Center may perform steroidal injections into the region to accelerate healing. In conjunction with these treatments, physical therapy is often prescribed to stretch and strengthen muscles and tendons. Should tendinitis persist despite these conservative treatment steps, minimally invasive surgery may be required to remove inflamed tissue.
