NJ orthopedist Robert A. Kayal is a specialist in the treatment of numerous spinal disorders. One of the more common spinal disorders among teenage patients is scoliosis. While not limited to teens, scoliosis usually develops earlier in life than other spinal disorders. Dr. Kayal and his team at the Kayal Orthopaedic Center are specialists in diagnosing scoliosis and in providing patients with the best treatment plan for their condition
What is Scoliosis?
Scoliosis is a sideways curving of the spine. It occurs most often just before puberty, and is more common in girls than in boys. The severity of the spine’s curve determines, in large part, the severity of the symptoms experienced. Some of the symptoms include:
- Back pain
- Fatigue
- Shoulders and/or hips at different heights
- Difficulty sitting or standing for prolonged periods
- Changes in skin over the spine (color, texture, hair)
- Leaning of entire body to one side
There are a large number of possible causes of scoliosis. For some patients, the scoliosis may be the result of a genetic condition, while others may suffer from neuromuscular problems. Unfortunately, most cases of scoliosis are idiopathic; meaning the cause of the disorder is unknown.
Scoliosis Treatments
The orthopedic surgeons at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC provide patients with expert treatment for scoliosis. Diagnosing scoliosis begins with a physical exam, including a forward bending test, to define the degree of spinal curve. If a curve is found during the exam, x-rays or MRIs can be taken to more accurately identify its severity. The physician may also perform a neurological exam to test for changes in strength, reflexes, and sensation. Once the diagnosis is complete, a treatment plan is developed based upon the size and location of the curve, the age of the patient, and the symptoms experienced. Ideally, if treatment is required, a brace can be used to slow the progression of the curve. If the condition progresses or is very severe, surgery may be required to correct spinal curvature.
