TREATMENT OF SPINAL DISORDERS: herniated discs

Spine Surgeons Bergen County NJNJ spinal surgeon Robert A. Kayal is an expert in the treatment of spinal disorders. One of the most common spinal disorders is a herniated disc. Discs are small, rubbery cushions that act as shock absorbers for the spine while helping to maintain spinal flexibility. When these discs are damaged, they may crack. This condition is known as a herniated disc (sometimes called a slipped or ruptured disc) and can happen at any location on the spine, from the neck to lower back. The physicians at the Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of herniated discs, regardless of location and severity.

Herniated Disc Causes and Symptoms

There are two major causes of herniated discs: (1) acute injury, and (2) degeneration due to wear and tear. Disc injuries can cause small tears or cracks in the disc’s outer layer. Over time, the “gel” inside the disc may be forced out through these openings. Without this gel, the disc fails to provide necessary cushioning and flexibility. Whether a herniated disc is caused by injury or aging, the symptoms are generally the same. Pain, numbness and weakness in the disc region are common. In addition, herniated discs can press against spinal nerves, causing symptoms in the buttocks, legs, and other areas where nerves travel.

While herniated discs are relatively common, the good news is that the majority of these cases do not require surgery. Herniated disc symptoms may be alleviated with rest, heat and ice, walking and light activity, and physical therapy. For patients with a herniated disc that continues to be symptomatic, a visit to a NJ spine specialist is wise.

Herniated Disc Treatments

The orthopedic physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC provide expert treatment for patients with herniated discs. Diagnosis is accomplished through a combination of physical examinations and imaging tools, such as x-rays, MRIs and CT scans. With these diagnostic tools, Dr. Kayal and his expert team tailor an appropriate treatment plan for each patient. Treatment is based upon the specific herniated disc(s), along with the patient’s age, physical condition, and other medical issues. If conservative treatments like NSAIDs and physical therapy are unsuccessful, surgery may be needed to repair the disc herniation.
