The symptoms of spinal fractures vary, depending on the location, severity, and type of fracture. The most common symptoms are pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, muscle spasms, and spinal instability. The most severe spinal fractures can also result in spinal cord injury and potential paralysis.
Spinal fractures are generally due to traumatic events. Incidents such as car accidents, falls, sports injuries, and acts of violence are the most common causes. In addition to these types of events, conditions such as osteoporosis and spine tumors may contribute to spinal fractures.
Treatments for Spinal Fractures

This is dependent upon the type and severity of the fracture, the spinal level(s) involved, and the condition of the patient. The first line of treatment for non-emergency cases involves conservative steps, such as activity limitations, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and customized bracing. With more severe fractures, however, surgery may be required to address the condition.
