NJ spinal surgeon Robert A. Kayal is an expert in the treatment of spinal disorders, including fractures of the spine. Spinal fractures vary significantly from patient to patient, and injury to injury. Fractures may be located in the lower lumbar spine, or as high as the cervical spine (neck). Severe injuries may necessitate immediate surgery, while minor fractures may call for a conservative, nonsurgical approach. Regardless of the location and severity of the spinal fracture, the physicians at the Kayal Orthopaedic Center are specialists in diagnosing and treating the condition.
Symptoms and Causes of Spinal Fractures
Spinal Fractures
Spinal fracture is a generic term that describes numerous specific conditions. Dr. Kayal and his team treat all of these conditions, including:
- Veterbral compression fractures
- Cervical spine fractures
- Axial burst fractures
- Spondylosis or stress fractures
- Flexion/distraction fractures
- Transverse process fractures
The symptoms of spinal fractures vary, depending on the location, severity, and type of fracture. The most common symptoms are pain, numbness, tingling, weakness, muscle spasms, and spinal instability. The most severe spinal fractures can also result in spinal cord injury and potential paralysis.
Spinal fractures are generally due to traumatic events. Incidents such as car accidents, falls, sports injuries, and acts of violence are the most common causes. In addition to these types of events, conditions such as osteoporosis and spine tumors may contribute to spinal fractures.
Treatments for Spinal Fractures
The spine physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC provide expert treatment for spinal fractures. Physicians diagnose the problem by conducting physical examinations and utilizing imaging tests, such as x-rays, CT scans, and MRIs. If these diagnostic tools indicate the presence of a spinal fracture, Dr. Kayal and his team determine the best treatment plan for the patient. This is dependent upon the type and severity of the fracture, the spinal level(s) involved, and the condition of the patient. The first line of treatment for non-emergency cases involves conservative steps, such as activity limitations, physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, and customized bracing. With more severe fractures, however, surgery may be required to address the condition.
