Platelet rich plasma (PRP), also known as autologous rich plasma (ACP), is a relatively new procedure that can be employed to aid in the healing process of many orthopaedic injuries. This technique uses one's own venous blood, which is then spun in a centrifuge system to separate its red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. After centrifugation, the patient's own autologous conditioned plasma, enriched with its newly-activated growth factors and proteins, is then sterilely injected into the site of bone, cartilage, nerve, joint, ligament, muscle or tendon injury in effort to heal that soft tissue and reverse the disease process.
NJ orthopedic physician Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS of Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC, is a pioneer of platelet rich plasma (PRP) injections and has already performed several hundred PRP procedures to date. Using this cutting-edge technology, Dr. Kayal and his team have had great success in the surgical and non-surgical management of many orthopaedic ailments, including: meniscal tears, ACL tears, rotator cuff tears, SLAP tears, labral tears, achilles tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, golfer's elbow, sciatica, trigger points, back pain, neck pain, bursitis, arthritis, ligament sprains, muscle strains and carpal tunnel syndrome.
