As the largest joint in the human body, the knee is commonly plagued with athletic injuries. Thanks to the sports medicine specialists at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC, recreational and professional athletes suffering from knee injuries can be quickly rehabilitated and returned to their sport of choice.
Common Athletic Injuries: Knee Meniscal Tear
The knee joint functions when a myriad of complex parts—such as ligaments, tendons and bone—work in conjunction with one another. Unfortunately for those competing in athletics, many of these complex parts are prone to injury. One of the most commonly injured parts of the knee are the menisci, which are two wedge-shaped cartilage pieces that pad the knee joint. These rubbery, durable cartilage sections allow the knee to absorb shock during running, walking, impact and activity, but they may be damaged during squatting, twisting, tackling or impact.
Not an athlete? While a meniscal tear is a common sports injury, aging is also a contributor to the breakdown of knee cartilage and tissue. If you’re experiencing knee pain, swelling or tenderness related to your meniscus, NJ knee specialist Robert A. Kayal, MD can help. After performing a thorough examination, discussing your symptoms and ordering appropriate diagnostic imaging, Dr. Kayal and his team of sports medicine experts will recommend a treatment plan for your meniscus tear.
Treatment for Torn Meniscus
Small meniscus tears along the outside of the knee may heal on their own with rest, ice, compression and elevation (RICE). Over-the-counter or prescribed anti-inflammatory medications may also be used to alleviate discomfort and swelling. If symptoms persist or your meniscus tear is severe, minimally invasive knee surgery may be required. Using small incisions, your NJ knee surgeon will insert a camera and tiny surgical instruments into the knee joint to repair torn menisci.
Fortunately, many minimally invasive knee procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, and rehabilitation is much faster than with traditional incisions. The NJ sports medicine physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC strive to get you back on your feet as quickly as possible, so call today to schedule your appointment.
