Dr. Edward C. Friedland, MD was born, raised and educated in New York City, and graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1953. He received his BA degree from New York University in 1957, and his MD degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 1961. Following medical school, Dr. Friedland served a one year internship at Maimonides Hospital, followed by a one year general surgical residency at the Veterans Administration Hospital, both in Brooklyn, NY. He then served two years as a medical officer in the US Air Force. On completing his military tour, Dr. Friedland moved to New Jersey, where he finished an orthopaedic surgical residency at St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson. He has been in the active practice of orthopedic surgery here in New Jersey since August 1968.
Dr. Friedland initially practiced in Paterson, joining the active staff of both St. Joseph's Hospital and Barnert Memorial Hospital. While at Barnert Memorial Hospital, he served as Chairman of the Orthopaedic Department, as well as chairing the Hospital Facilities Committee, the Institutional Review Board and serving on the Tissue Committee. In 1975, he joined the active staff at The Valley Hospital, and has continued that affiliation to the present time. During his 35 years on The Valley Hospital medical staff, Dr. Friedland has chaired the Orthopaedic Subcommittee on Quality Assurance, the Tissue Committee and the Education Committee, and has served on the Credentials Committee, the Utilization Committee and the DAS/SDS Committee. He currently serves on the Standards Committee.
Dr. Friedland is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who has been active in the medical community throughout the 40+ years he has been in practice. In January 1970, he was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, a position that he maintained up to 2004. He has been elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is an active member of the Eastern Orthopaedic Association, the New Jersey Orthopaedic Society, the American Medical Association and the Bergen County Medical Society.
