Dr. Alan Zalkowitz was born in New York City and received his bachelor’s of science from Brooklyn College. He attended the Catholic University of Louvain Medical School in Belgium from 1964 through 1969 and graduated cum laude in 1969. At that time medical school cost $100 per semester, as it was subsidized by the Catholic church.
Dr. Zalkowitz completed his internship at the McGill Hospital system at St. Mary’s Hospital in Montreal, Canada, from 1969 through 1970. As part of his medical residency at Stanford Hospital in Connecticut, he spent time at Yale New Haven Medical Center from 1970 through 1972. After finishing his residency, Dr. Zalkowitz started the Rheumatology fellowship program at Mount Sinai Hospital New York City where he ran the arthritis clinic from 1972 to 1974. During his time at Mount Sinai he was the clinical physician running the world famous Gout Clinic.
In the 1980s he spent time at the prestigious Paterson Clinic in Paterson, NJ. After completing his education Dr. Zalkowitz founded New Jersey Associates in Medicine, known at the time as Internal Medicine Associates. He was Chief of Rheumatology at The Valley Hospital for several years in the 1990s and taught rheumatology to the house staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Paterson.
Dr. Zalkowitz was board certified in internal medicine in 1977 and rheumatology in 1981. He is a member of The Medical Society of Bergen County and the New Jersey chapter of the American College of Rheumatology. He started the Lupus Foundation of New Jersey in 1975 and gave lectures every five years on updates in the treatment and management of systemic lupus erythematosus.
He has been honored as one of Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors for the last 19 years and has been recognized by his peers as one of the top rheumatologists in the United States in 2011, 2016 and 2017. He has been honored to be in the Best Doctors in the Metropolitan Area and Inside New Jersey as a leading rheumatologist and innovator in the field for many years.
Dr. Zalkowitz is excited to start a rheumatology division to complement the prestigious Kayal Orthopaedic and Pain and Spine Centers in Franklin Lakes, Glen Rock and Westwood, NJ. He has spent over 40 years helping people with complex rheumatologic problems. With his experience and knowledge he is looking forward to serving the community for many years to come.
